Choosing the Right Plan

The Public Employees’ Benefits Program offers healthcare benefits for State of Nevada employees and retirees; employees of participating local governmental agencies; and local governmental agency retirees.

Employees must work at least 80 hours per month, with new employee coverage beginning the first day of the month following 3 months of fulltime employment.

Eligibility timeframes for retirees vary, depending upon whether the individual retires from a state or a non-state agency. Click here to learn more about retiree benefits and eligibility.

Employees and retirees are offered two medical plan options: a Self-Funded PPO Plan and an HMO Plan.

The Self-Funded PPO Plan is a network of doctors and healthcare facilities who agree to provide medical services at discounted rates. Claims are submitted for the services you receive, and you share 20% (in-network) or 50% (out-of-network) for the cost of those services. Although you may access services with any provider, your out-of pocket costs will be lower if you use PPO network providers. Certain services require you to pay a copayment, and other services require that you satisfy a plan year deductible before the plan starts paying its portion of the claim. You do not need a referral from your primary care physician to visit a specialist. The PPO Plan offers access to services worldwide.

A Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) uses a pre-defined group of doctors, facilities, and other healthcare professionals who concentrate on preventive care and early intervention. No deductible is required and copayments are paid at the time of services. You choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP) who coordinates all your medical treatment. The HMO Plans are limited to  specific service areas. Hometown Health Plan is offered in Northern Nevada and Health Plan of Nevada is offered in Southern Nevada. Senior Dimensions Retiree Choice Plus Plan is available to retirees with Medicare A & B residing in specific counties in Nevada.
